Portishead have reunited for a rare performance at Brian Eno’s Together For Palestine benefit concert, playing the track ‘Roads’ in a pre-recorded segment.
Portishead have reunited for a rare performance of their 1994 song ‘Roads’. The band pre-recorded their performance of the track to air during Brian Eno’s benefit concert Together For Palestine, which took place September 17.
The event would also see performances from Damon Albarn, James Blake, King Krule, PinkPantheress and more. Florence Pugh, Benedict Cumberbatch, Louis Theroux and other celebrities also appeared at the event to speak out about Gaza and advocate for others to do so as well.
Portishead, who were unable to attend the event in person, still reunited to record a special one-off performance, which featured original members Beth Gibbons, Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow playing one of their most haunting tracks from their debut album Dummy. The band was also accompanied by a string quartet, adding to the somber sound of the performance.
You can watch the full performance, pre-recorded for Together For Palestine below:
“We can’t be there in the day but we desperately wanted to be involved to put our voice to help end the Ongoing Genocide that is taking place right now,” Barrow wrote in an Instagram post earlier this month. The band also shared a statement, writing, “We are incredibly honoured to stand in solidarity with Palestine and be part of this crucial event. The genocide must stop.”
Portishead last played together in 2022 for the UK charity show, “Help! A War Child Benefit Concert”, which raised money for children suffering from the war in Ukraine.
Together For Palestine has pledged that all funds raised will be distributed through Choose Love, a UK charity that supports local humanitarians in conflict zones, who will then distribute the funds to Palestinian charities. Later in the night, actress and activist Jameela Jamil announced the show had raised £1.5 million ($3 million AUD).
