The Simpsons are set to make a mess of theatres all over again. Disney has confirmed a brand new Simpsons movie will land in cinemas on 23 July 2027, two decades after the dysfunctional Springfield clan’s last big screen outing.
Disney has confirmed The Simpsons Movie 2 is real and is set to release July 23, 2027.
The announcement was dropped via 20th Century Studios’ Instagram, accompanied by a cheeky visual of Homer reaching for a sprinkle-covered doughnut shaped like the number two. The caption drove the point home: ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds.’
The first Simpsons Movie hit in 2007, earning a massive $536 million worldwide. Its dome-trapped Springfield storyline remains one of the series’ most ambitious swings outside the TV format. At the time, critic Kirk Honeycutt described the film as “caustic, irreverent, constantly amusing and a tiny bit rude,” adding that it was “almost, dare I say it, charming.”
This time around, the story is being kept under wraps, but what we do know is that Disney has shuffled its release slate to give The Simpsons a prime summer spot, one previously reserved for an untitled Marvel flick. It’ll also open against Warner Bros.’ animated musical Bad Fairies, setting the stage for a clash of pop culture titans. Meanwhile, the TV juggernaut shows no signs of slowing. First appearing on The Tracey Ullman Show before spinning off in 1989, The Simpsons just launched its 37th season. The voice cast remains iconic: Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).
Creator Matt Groening last teased a sequel to The Simpsons Movie in 2019 during a Q&A at Comic-Con, promising a follow-up “one of these days”, leaving us to ponder when any news would eventually come out.
So, while you wait, why not check out some of the newer seasons? Sure, they may not hold a candle to the golden era of the show, but it still has moments that make me optimistic for what this movie has to offer.
