Metallica’s M72 World Tour hit Melbourne on November 8, packing Marvel Stadium with 50,000 fans and delivering a show that balanced the classics with a few fresh surprises.
The setlist shifted again from previous stops in Perth and Adelaide, keeping the Australian leg of the tour unpredictable unlike Oasis who have played the same set list at every reunion show.
The band opened with Creeping Death and For Whom the Bell Tolls, a double hit that’s held steady throughout the tour. From there they tore through Fuel, The Memory Remains, The Unforgiven and Wherever I May Roam before Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo took over for the now-famous doodle segment.
In Perth, the pair covered the John Butler Trio’s Zebra. Adelaide’s show followed with INXS’s Need You Tonight and The Angels’ Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. Melbourne’s crowd went wild as Hammett and Trujillo launched into The Living End’s Prisoner of Society, a perfect hometown nod that turned the stadium into one massive punk sing-along. You can bet The Living End will be buzzing knowing Metallica just ripped through their anthem on their home turf.
The rest of the night ran through The Day That Never Comes, Moth Into Flame, Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters, before closing with Seek & Destroy, Lux Æterna, Master of Puppets, One and Enter Sandman.
Compared to Perth’s opener, Melbourne traded Holier Than Thou for The Memory Remains and leaned more into mid-era material. Adelaide’s show featured Leper Messiah and King Nothing, giving fans across the country slightly different experiences. It’s clear Metallica are rotating their catalogue to keep each city unique.
Earlier in the day, James Hetfield stopped by AC/DC Lane to see a new mural of late bassist Cliff Burton and to pay his respects at the Bon Scott statue, showing the band’s genuine connection to Australia’s rock legacy.
Melbourne’s show felt like the perfect midpoint in Metallica’s Australian tour, a mix of heavy nostalgia, rotating deep cuts and one more hometown tribute that proved the band still know exactly how to make every city feel like theirs.
