Yungblud has urged fans in Melbourne to lend their voices to the people of Iran in an impassioned speech mid-set, saying the community needs to fight for equality and liberation around the globe.
Yungblud has taken a stand on Iran during his Melbourne set, calling for fans to speak out and amplify the voices of Iranians as anti-government protests in the country rage on and protestors face potential execution.
In between his performance at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Tuesday, the artist took a moment to speak to the audience about the situation in Iran.
“Two years ago, I spoke about a girl called Mahsa Amini from Iran, who was murdered for not wearing her hijab. And no, it is not my prerogative to question somebody’s religion, but this community fights for equality and liberation throughout the f**king world.”
“What is going on in Iran is beautiful, because this revolution is led by the f**king women. And for four days, they have had their internet cut off, they have had their electricity cut off, they are in darkness. They are asking for our voice, we have to be their f**king light right now,” Yungblud continued.
“So speak, shout, post, because they are fighting for freedom, they are fighting for their freedom, they are fighting for our freedom. Because nobody is free until we are all f**king free.”
This isn’t the first time Yungblud has lent his voice to global causes, nor the first time he has spoken out about the treatment of people and protests in Iran. In 2022, the artist took a moment during his set at Delaware’s Firefly Music Festival to speak to fans about the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died after she was arrested by the morality police for not wearing a hijab in September 2022, sparking mass protests in the country.
“I’m so f**king angry right now and every time something in the world happens like this, I ask myself if I’m gonna f**king talk about it or not,” Yungblud said at the time. “Last week in the country of Iran, a young girl called Mahsa Amini was murdered for wearing her hair outside of her hijab.”
“I am not gonna stand here and question someone’s religion, but I am gonna f**king fight for expression. I am gonna fight for freedom and I am gonna fight for the women of f**king Iran right now.”
Yungblud continues his tour across Australia tonight with a show at Adelaide Entertainment Centre – his third performance in the country since kicking off in Sydney on Saturday.
