Ivan Moody has stepped in to clear up the speculation swirling around Motograter, after rumours started floating around that the Five Finger Death Punch frontman was gearing up to rejoin his old band.
He is not, in a since deleted Instagram Stories video, Moody said he isn’t returning as a member, but he has bought the trademarks for Motograter, including the rights to the band’s name and their infamous namesake instrument.
According to Moody, the move is about ‘protecting its legacy’ and stopping the brand from being dragged through the mud or used without control.
That’s a big swing from a guy who already has a stadium sized career, knowing Motograter’s history though, it makes sense.
What Ivan Moody actually bought
Moody explained his decision came down to not wanting Motograter’s identity to be “abused or misused”, after years of watching the project fall apart.
“Through the years I’ve watched, the last two decades I’ve watched that project whittle out into dust on a memory. And it hurt. And knowing that there was so much involved with that and the way that there was so much potential and it was X’d out.”
He said talks with Noah ‘Shark’ Robertson helped push him over the edge, with Moody claiming there were too many people involved, too much drama, and too much risk of the band being pulled apart further.
“When [Noah “Shark” Robertson (Motograter drummer) and I] started talking, it became very evident to me that there was a lot of people in play. And there was a lot of crap, man. So I decided to buy it. And that’s what I did. I bought the trademark for Motograter and the Machine. And I patented it, the whole spiel. That way, nobody could take it anymore and it couldn’t be abused or misused.”
Moody calls out the rumour source
The original reunion chatter reportedly stemmed from comments online by former member Michael ‘The Kidd’ Stewart, and Moody didn’t exactly respond politely.
“First and foremost, to Michael ‘The Kidd’ Stewart, you bottom-feeding bubbleheaded boob. How dare you step on my toes, spreading rumors and causing commotion. I was so pissed off when I read all that man. This Michael fking Stewart guy. Who the fk do you think you are dude? F**king peon.”
Where this leaves Motograter
Moody was part of Motograter in the early 2000s before moving on and eventually blowing up with Five Finger Death Punch, instead of rejoining, it sounds like he’s positioning himself as a creative director to keep the name from disappearing completely.
Whether it turns into new music, a reboot, or just a locked down legacy move, at least one thing’s clear: Ivan Moody isn’t letting Motograter be a free for all anymore.
