Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are officially reuniting again, and this time they’re not flipping burgers or chasing Orange Soda jokes.
The long time friends and former Nickelodeon icons have signed on to star in (and produce) a new horror-comedy film titled ‘Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein’, with production set to kick off this American summer.
If the name sounds like a fever dream you’d have after binge watching late night TV in 2002, that’s kind of the point, the project is being written by Jonah Feingold (director of ‘31 Candles’ and ‘At Midnight’) and it’s described as a modern homage to the classic Abbott and Costello ‘Meet…’ monster movies.
The film is co-produced by Thompson’s Artists for Artists company alongside Range Media Partners, with Range’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Pete Micelli handling sales.
What’s the plot?
According to the official logline, Thompson and Mitchell will play delivery drivers “whose routine drop-off takes a terrifying turn when they arrive at a creepy, out-of-place castle and accidentally awaken Frankenstein’s monster — turning an ordinary night into a fight for survival,” the movie’s logline reads.
So yeah. It’s basically “two regular dudes have the worst shift of their lives”, but with a stitched up monster sprinting after them.
What Kenan and Kel said
Thompson and Mitchell last worked together on 2023’s ‘Good Burger 2’ for Paramount+, but this new project sounds like it’s aiming for something weirder and a bit darker, while still keeping their chemistry front and centre.
“Kel and I have always loved finding new ways to work together, and this project felt like the perfect mix of nostalgia, comedy, and something completely unexpected,” Thompson said in a statement per Hollywood Reporter.
“We’re excited to bring a fresh take on a classic monster story and have some fun doing it.”
Added Mitchell, “Coming back together always feels natural, and this lets us tap into everything people love about our dynamic while trying something totally new. It’s funny, it’s scary, and it’s a great ride.”
No release date yet, but if this nails the balance between silly and spooky, it could just be a comfort watch that actually works.
