If Lamb Of God have always sounded like the world collapsing in slow motion, Randy Blythe’s latest comments prove it’s not just stage noise, it’s a genuine read of the times.
The band’s upcoming twelfth album, ‘Into Oblivion’, isn’t titled for drama, according to Blythe, it’s a blunt snapshot of where he believes society is headed, especially in the United States.
When the record was announced earlier this month, he explained the meaning behind the name with typical bite (via The PRP):
“Because that’s where we’re heading. In general, the album is about the ongoing and rapid breakdown of the social contract, particularly here in America. Things are acceptable now that would’ve horrified people just 20 years ago.”
In a new interview with Kerrang!, Blythe doubles down, painting a picture that’s less “rockstar rant” and more exhausted realism, he’s also made major changes in his personal life to cope with the constant digital noise.
Blythe and his wife have reportedly severely limited internet access, ditched social media, and even put physical steps between themselves and going online, basically forcing themselves back into real life.
Blythe admits he checks the news daily, and what he sees leaves him rattled
As he told Kerrang!:
“I am not happy with the way the world is right now. We are careening towards some sort of crash, and there are people who not only recognize this, but are trying to hasten it in order to profit from it. [With] the distribution of wealth, the gap is getting wider and wider and wider and wider. I don’t just think that’s true: that’s a fact. We need to learn how important we are to one another. Because the super-rich aren’t going to help you.”
He later added:
“This is the moment at which empires fall. We’ve seen this again and again and again. So without sounding too doomsday-ish, I think we’re in late-stage capitalism, and I don’t think it’s going to end well.”
Blythe also pointed to Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath and disaster capitalism as a grim example of what happens when profit comes before people, warning: “There are obscenely wealthy people dictating policy, whose only concern is enriching themselves.”
Lamb Of God‘s ‘Into Oblivion’ is out March 13th, pre order here.
