Former Misfits vocalist Michale Graves has had multiple UK shows cancelled following renewed backlash over his past support of the Proud Boys and previous far right remarks.
Graves, who fronted Misfits from 1995 to 2000, had originally lined up nine UK dates across February and March, as of this week that run has reportedly been cut down to five remaining shows in London, Reading, Worcester, Corby and Oxford (per News Week).
The cancellations come amid an online campaign drawing attention to Graves’ 2020 public endorsement of the Proud Boys, a far right group formed in 2016, members of the organisation were later federally indicted on seditious conspiracy charges over their alleged roles in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Graves previously testified that he had been asked to perform for five Proud Boys members on the afternoon of January 6th, at the time, lawyers for the group argued that this indicated they had no intention of storming the Capitol (per News Week).
Graves responds
Addressing the cancellations, Graves shared a statement on social media.
“I’ve become aware of an aggressive online campaign of organizations and individuals focused on my upcoming shows in Europe. I respect that people may hold different opinions or choose not to attend these shows.”
He continued, “I want to be very clear: my shows are about music, community, and shared passion. I do not promote violence, hatred, or harm, and those who have attended my performances know that my focus has always been bringing people together through music. All are welcome.”
Local reaction has been mixed. Worcester councillor Neil Laurensen criticised both Graves and the venue hosting him, telling the BBC, “I will never set foot in [The Marrs Bar] ever again…I’m embarrassed, I’m ashamed for Worcester.”
Graves also added, “The live music scene should remain a safe and inclusive space for everyone — artists, fans, venue staff, and local communities alike. No one should feel unsafe or intimidated for participating in or supporting live music events. If my music is not for you, I fully respect your choice not to attend.
“However, I respectfully ask that disagreements remain peaceful and that the hardworking people behind these venues are treated with respect. I look forward to performing for those who wish to be there and sharing music in a positive, safe and respectful environment.”
For now, the remaining UK dates appear set to proceed.
