Neve Campbell Talks About Playing A Mother In Scream 7

Share

Scream heroine Sidney is a mum now, and Neve Campbell says that development brings her character full circle.

Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott skipped 2022’s Scream VI, ceding the spotlight to sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. For fairly long and complicated reasons, neither of them are making the scene in the imminent Scream 7. And so, director Kevin Williamson and co-screenwriter Guy Busick are bringing out the franchises big guns out for the latest instalment in the post-modern slasher series, with Campbell returning to her signature, role, as well as fellow veterans David Arquette and Matthew Lillard.

Now, both their characters are dead, so I’d expect some kind of flashback or archival video situation to account for their presence (although we never really confirmed Stu’s death, did we….?). But Campbell’s Sidney is not only very much alive, she’s a mother now, with her daughter Tatum, played by Isabel May, being a potential victim for whoever’s lurking behind the ol’ Ghostface mask this time around.

Motherhood has always been a key theme in the Scream films – the murder of Sidney’s mother, Maureen Prescott (Lynn McRee), is what kicked off the whole thing, after all, and various vengeance-crazed parents and rejected children have cropped up in the series over the years. But this is the first time we’ve really seen Sidney in full mum mode, and Campbell thinks it brings the home.

“It’s a whole full-circle story for Sidney,” she told TotalFilm. “There’s a lot of trauma around her motherhood and her mother. She’s made the very brave choice to have children herself. And she’s made this decision, she wants to live in this small town, have a family, and overcome her past.

“And of course, she’s got great fear that that will come to visit her family, which it does. But she gets to sort of heal that wound.”

Scream 7 is in cinemas from February 26.
