Powderfinger Confirm 2027 Reunion Tour After 16 Years

Share

After a week of cryptic billboards and coded messages, all five members are getting back together. The Australian shows start in September 2027.

Powderfinger are back for a full Australian tour.

On Friday morning (9 October), the Brisbane band confirmed they will tour Australia from September 2027, ending 16 years without a full national run. Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins and Jon Coghill appeared in the announcement video, finally putting an answer to the question fans have been asking all week.

Fanning confirmed the plan to play shows around the country from September next year. Guitarist Darren Middleton offered a little more of a promise: “We’re going to build something pretty special just for you guys.”

For a band that said goodbye with the Sunsets Farewell Tour in 2010, that is a fairly big change of plans.

When are Powderfinger’s 2027 tour dates being announced?

The band has confirmed a September 2027 start, but not the cities, venues, full dates, ticket prices or on-sale schedule. Those details are due at 6am AEDT on Monday 12 October.

Fans are being directed to the official Powderfinger website to join the fan club ahead of the announcement. Until then, any supposed set of confirmed dates should be treated with caution.

From Electric Horsemen clues to an actual reunion

BLUNT covered the first wave of reunion rumours on 7 October, when strange billboards started appearing across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The displays were packed with numbers and references to the band’s history, while an Instagram account called The Return of the Electric Horsemen pointed straight to a track from their 1996 album Double Allergic.

The clues included their seven albums, 18 ARIA Awards and the date 13 November 2010, when Powderfinger played their final farewell show in Brisbane. The band’s own accounts then joined the cryptic campaign. By 8 October, BLUNT had updated its report to confirm Powderfinger were behind it, although the reason for the campaign was still unknown.

There was another plausible explanation at the time. Double Allergic turned 30 this year, and an anniversary release would not have been much of a stretch. Instead, the announcement is the one fans had been hoping for: all five members, back on the road.

It is not that Powderfinger have completely disappeared since 2010. Four members joined forces at Splendour in the Grass in 2017, and all five came together for the 2020 One Night Lonely livestream, which raised money for Support Act and Beyond Blue. Neither amounted to a proper national tour.

Now they have committed to one. There is no confirmed new album or setlist, and no tickets on sale yet. But the reunion is no longer a rumour, and after 16 years, Australian audiences are getting another chance to see Powderfinger onstage.

Powderfinger’s full 2027 tour announcement is expected at 6am AEDT on Monday 12 October. BLUNT will update the story as details are confirmed.
