Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote about Buffy The Vampire Slayer co-star on the anniversary of her tragic death.
Buffy The Vampire fans were heartbroken a year ago when the news emerged that Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn, the title character’s younger sister, had died at the age of 39 on February 26, 2025. It eventuated that Trachtenberg had succumbed to diabetes complications, possibly stemming from a liver transplant she received in 2024.
On the anniversary of Trachtenberg’s death, Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to honour the memory of her late co-star and friend.
“I’m not sure how it’s been a year,” Gellar wrote. “I’m one of the lucky ones who has over 30 years of memories with you. From our first day on set together, to less than a year later, when you were already taller than me.
“But I first worked [you] with on All My Children,” Gellar went on. “I watched you become a star with Harriet. You were great to my kids. Countless kids bdays you attended even though I’m sure you had somewhere cooler to be. But most of all, when I think of you, that smile that took up your entire face and brought so much joy to others is what comes to mind. You may not have been with us long enough, but we will make sure everyone remembers.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her signature role as Buffy Summers in the upcoming reboot/sequel series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, with Chloé Zhao (Eternals, Hamnet) directing the pilot, and Dolly Parton on executive producer duties. Parton’s production company, Sandollar, produced the original series. Gellar will next be seen in Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come, the sequel to the 2019 class-conscious horror movie, opposite Samara Weaving, Kathryn Newton, and David Cronenberg.
