Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix has opened up about his faith journey, revealing he is now ‘a full-blown believer’ after years of addiction, relapse, and what he describes as a spiritual wrestling match.
Appearing on the Dumb Blonde podcast with Bunnie XO, Shaddix reflected on giving his life to God in early 2013, during a period when sobriety was no longer optional (per Blabbermouth).
From Rock Bottom To Recovery
“I’ll tell you this: my faith walk, it’s been like a wrestling match. It started with my sobriety,” Shaddix said, describing how recovery meetings first pushed him toward the idea of faith.
He admitted, “I’ll tell you: the two things I never wanted to be in my life was sober and a Christian. And here I am now — a follower, a sober guy.”
For Shaddix, the shift came after years of failed attempts to control his addictions alone. He described hitting a breaking point, praying for change beyond his own power. “And when I finally put the bottle down and really, it was like that foxhole prayer… ‘God, do you just hear me?'”
‘I’m A Full-Blown Believer Now’
Initially wary of church culture, Shaddix said seeing faith lived authentically by someone close to him changed everything. “And then it became, like, I’m a full-blown believer now.”
He also acknowledged hesitation about discussing religion publicly. “I didn’t wanna share it with people, because I felt that it wasn’t edgy and it wasn’t rock and roll,” he explained, adding that breaking generational cycles became more important than image.
Shaddix has previously spoken about battling suicidal depression and the strain addiction placed on his marriage during the making of 2012’s ‘The Connection’. Today, he remains sober.
In a past interview with Kerrang!, he was blunt about faith’s impact: “It’s been key for me. I follow a man named Jesus and I think he’s awesome. Unfortunately, there are a lot of terrible f**king Christians out there… but my walk with God has been one that’s evolved over the years.”
