God Of War game creator David Jaffe slammed Prime Video’s first image from the upcoming adaptation. “Could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s s***ting in the woods?”
Well, we got our first look at Sons Of Anarchy‘s Ryan Hurst and Crystal Lake‘s Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus in Prime Video’s upcoming God Of War adaptation, and people had some Opinions.
A lot of folks thought it was AI-generated, although it most certainly is the official image Amazon released – I’m looking at the publicity email right now. Hurst muddied the waters a bit, jotting off a quick “Don’t believe everything you see on the internet, kids.” – which you could read as either confirming the image has a bit of AI fakery, or admonishment not to listen to armchair experts on such matters (I myself am not an armchair expert – I have a couch).
It strikes me as a bit of a storm in teacup, but I have zero emotional investment in God Of War, and it looks fine to me. But someone who does have a fair whack of emotional investment is David Jaffe, who was game director and lead designer on the original game back in 2005. And he is not happy.
On his YouTube channel, Jaffe went on a bit of a tear about the “dumb fucking image”.
“Kratos in this pose with this expression, not the guy’s face, but this expression, he just looks stupid,” Jaffe opined. “If you’re going to reveal to most people a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they’ve never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?
“Maybe that’s conscious,” he mused. “Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story and if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, ‘I don’t want to watch that show.’’ Okay, maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s shitting in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like.”
Well, I guess that’s a take. Check out the whole thing below.
