Nine Inch Nails fans can exhale, Trent Reznor has walked back fears that the band is done touring, making it clear the door isn’t slammed shut, it’s just… not opening anytime soon.
The confusion kicked off during Nine Inch Nails’ February 27th show in Tulsa, where Reznor dropped a line that hit like a gut punch for longtime fans).
“I don’t know if we’re gonna be touring anymore after this, but I’m proud of the show that we’re doing right now. And I’m f*ckin’ grateful that you’ve chosen to spend your evening with us tonight. Thank you very much.”
For a band that’s built its legacy on intense, all consuming live shows, that uncertainty landed hard.
Reznor sets the record straight
Fast forward to March 16th (Monday) in Sacramento, the final night of the Peel It Back World Tour, and Reznor addressed the noise head on (per Metal Injection) :
“And to be clear, I think I said something the other day that then got misconstrued into something that is not intentionally necessarily true… That doesn’t mean we may not tour again. We may tour again. It won’t be next month, it won’t be this year.”
So this isn’t a farewell, but it’s also not business as usual, Reznor was blunt about why the band even returned to touring in the first place:
“I never said we were intentionally stopping, and I never meant that. But, to be truthful, we didn’t tour for a while before this tour because, frankly, I didn’t know if we could do it well, and if it still mattered, and if really [felt] like we had something to say…”
New music over the road
Instead of jumping straight back into another run, the focus is shifting inward.
“And what we’re going to do is work on some new music, and make some new shit. And if we feel inspired, and if we feel we can beat this [tour], we’ll see you again.”
Nine Inch Nails aren’t interested in repeating themselves, but if history says anything, it’s that Reznor doesn’t stay still for long.
