AC/DC guitarist Stevie Young has been hospitalised in Buenos Aires following a recent South American show, throwing a momentary shadow over the band’s ongoing Power Up Tour.
The 69 year old rhythm guitarist was admitted after the band’s latest run through Chile, with concerns surfacing as they prepared to kick off a three night stint in Argentina’s capital (per Ultimate Classic Rock).
According to a spokesperson, “Out of an abundance of caution, he was admitted to a local [Buenos Aires] hospital where he is undergoing a full battery of tests.”
There’s no sense of panic just yet, the same statement confirmed, “Stevie is doing well and is in good spirits. He is looking forward to getting onstage on Monday.”
For a band that has spent decades dodging derailments, that kind of calm reads as business as usual. Still, anytime an AC/DC member ends up in hospital, it hits differently.
This is a group that’s already weathered Malcolm Young’s decline, Brian Johnson’s hearing issues, and more near misses than most legacy acts survive.
From Malcolm’s shadow to AC/DC’s backbone
Stevie Young stepped into AC/DC in 2014, filling the near impossible gap left by his uncle Malcolm Young after his dementia diagnosis, it wasn’t his first call up either. He previously filled in during their 1988 US tour, proving early on he could lock into that razor tight rhythm engine.
He later played on ‘Rock or Bust’ and became an official member that same year, helping carry the band through a new era following Malcolm’s passing in 2017.
Since then, Stevie has been a steady presence through the Rock or Bust World Tour and now the sprawling Power Up Tour, which kicked off in 2024 and continues to pull massive crowds across continents.
What this means for the tour
AC/DC are scheduled to play three shows at Estadio River Plate starting Monday (March 23rd), marking their first return to Buenos Aires since 2009.
Beyond that, the tour rolls through Mexico before heading to North America in July, with stadium dates locked across the US and Canada through to late September. Right now, all signs point to the machine staying in motion, but with AC/DC every setback carries weight.
Fans will be watching closely to see if Stevie makes it back onstage as promised.
