Street Fighter returns to the big screen in all its 90s AF glory.
They made a smart play when they decided to set the new Street Fighter movie in 1993 – the year before the first live action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme hit our screens, and two years after the game Street Fighter II exploded into the arcades. Not for nostalgia reasons, friendo, although nostalgia is certainly one of the main drivers of interest here. No, there’s an aesthetic in play here that speaks to me on a deep level – it feels like a movie that came out in the 90s. I was there, Gandalf, and I think they might have nailed it.

What’s the vibe?
I’ve been singing Andrew Koji’s praises since I first clocked him in HBO‘s Warrior, so seeing him play Ryu has put a big ol’ smile on my face. Noah Centineo is a bit of an unknown quantity for me – I know I’ve seen him in stuff, but I couldn’t pick him out of line up at gunpoint. But he is about to play Rambo in the upcoming prequel, so clearly he’s got something going on. The rest of the cast is pretty fantastic, the tone is on pint, the action looks fun – what’s not to like?
