Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee has opened up about the emotional toll of endless social media consumption, saying the constant stream of negative information leaves many people exhausted, but believes disconnecting completely isn’t the solution.
Speaking with syndicated radio host LA Lloyd, Lee discussed the inspiration behind Evanescence’s latest single, “Who Will You Follow”, a track that explores truth, influence and the growing difficulty of separating reality from misinformation in the digital age.
According to Lee, the song asks an increasingly relevant question in a world dominated by algorithms, artificial intelligence and social media feeds (per Blabbermouth).
“When all your faith in reality fades away, who will you follow?”

The singer explained that modern online culture can leave people overwhelmed and emotionally drained, admitting she sometimes catches herself scrolling for long periods only to walk away feeling anxious or angry.
“I have to stop myself from doing this and then being, like, ‘Holy shit, an hour just went by and I don’t even know what I just looked at, but I’m mad and scared.'”
Lee compared the message behind the song to the central themes of The Matrix, describing it as a call to wake up, question what we’re being told and reconnect with one another on a human level.
“I want us to look at each other in the eyes as human beings and go, ‘Hi. Is this real life?'”
While acknowledging the pressure of today’s relentless news cycle, Lee stressed that pretending problems don’t exist is not the answer.
“We’re exhausted, and I don’t think the solution is just running away from it. I think it’s that we need change.”
Rather than spending her energy debating online, Lee said she prefers to channel her frustrations, hopes and concerns into music, believing songs can create a more meaningful impact than social media arguments.
At the same time, she recognised the positives of social platforms, particularly their ability to connect artists directly with fans. Lee said she still enjoys seeing creativity flourish online, revealing her personal feeds are largely filled with art, comedy and creative content.
