Deftones’ ‘Lost’ Album Eros Has Reportedly Surfaced Online, And Fans Don’t Know How To Feel

One of alternative metal’s most discussed unreleased records may have just escaped into the wild.

According to reports circulating online, recordings connected to Deftones’ long shelved album Eros have reportedly leaked nearly 18 years after the project was abandoned.

The files allegedly appeared online on June 22nd via a message board upload and are said to contain 11 songs connected to the unfinished sessions, alongside demos reportedly linked to 2020’s Ohms (per Lambgoat).

At the time of writing, the authenticity of the material has not been publicly confirmed by the band.

Eros occupies a complicated place in Deftones history.

Originally intended to become the Sacramento group’s sixth studio album, work reportedly began in 2007 before recording sessions with producer Terry Date commenced in 2008. Plans changed dramatically later that year after bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a devastating car accident in Santa Clara, California, leaving him in a coma.

The band later moved away from the project entirely, by 2009 attention shifted toward writing what would eventually become Diamond Eyes, released in 2010 with bassist Sergio Vega joining the lineup.

Over the years, fans repeatedly asked whether Eros would ever return, but in recent interviews, frontman Chino Moreno suggested that possibility remained unlikely.

“We’re always asked about Eros,” he said. “It will most likely never see the light of day. That would involve going back to that period and resurrecting unfinished things, and somehow bringing them to completion. Dallas is the only song that was anywhere near finished.”

Moreno had also previously reflected on the sessions themselves:

“Musically it’s probably 75-80% done and lyrically it was about halfway there, but honestly, I wasn’t too happy with the material we had,” he stated. “Some of the music was lacking a little bit. I had faith it was going to come together and be great in the end, but we never got to that point.”

The reported leak has sparked divided reactions online, with some fans curious to hear the unfinished material while others argue the recordings should remain untouched.

One Reddit user wrote:

“They chose to bury this record and make Diamond Eyes because they needed to heal and move on from their darkest era. Forcing this into the light goes completely against what the band wanted.”
