L7 bassist Jennifer Finch’s final major project will tell the story of her life in Los Angeles, music, photography and activism.

A posthumous memoir from L7 bassist Jennifer Finch is set to be published early next year, giving fans a final opportunity to hear her tell her story in her own words.

*Shooting Up and Making Out: A Memoir of My Life in LA and L7* will be released on January 19th, 2027, following Finch’s passing last month at the age of 59 after an aggressive battle with brain cancer.

Finch worked on the book for two years alongside co-writer Jeff Alulis, the former lead singer of Dead Kennedys, the memoir was completed before her death and will explore Finch’s life both inside and outside of L7 (per Alternative Press).

“Jennifer’s memoir was the last major project she completed before she passed away,” says Alulis.

“She and I worked together for two years to make sure she was happy with every word of it, and with someone as intentional and thoughtful as Jennifer, that was no small task! I’m heartbroken that she won’t get to see it published, but I’m thrilled to share her life and legacy with the world.”

Finch’s story in her own words

The memoir promises a candid look at Finch’s experiences as a musician, photographer and activist, while also confronting difficult periods of her life including addiction, abuse and loss.

For L7 fans, it will also provide a personal perspective on the band’s rise and the world surrounding one of alternative music’s most influential groups.

Finch joined L7 in 1986 and became a key part of the band’s early years, appearing on records including the self-titled debut, Smell the Magic, Bricks Are Heavy and Hungry for Stink. She later returned for the band’s 2019 album Scatter the Rats.

Before L7, Finch was part of Sugar Babydoll alongside Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland, making her an early participant in a network of musicians who would go on to shape alternative rock and the riot grrrl movement.

Her work extended beyond music, with photography and activism becoming important parts of her creative life.

Finch passed on July 18th after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her death came shortly after she withdrew from L7’s farewell tour to concentrate on treatment. Shooting Up and Making Out will allow Finch’s voice and experiences to continue beyond her passing.

The memoir is available to pre-order now, ahead of its January 19th, 2027 release.
