Maynard James Keenan has shared an update to fans about an unexpected hip surgery, which he has undergone in order to meet his ongoing touring commitments with all three of his main projects – Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer – for the rest of 2026.
The veteran vocalist, 62, posted a photo to his Instagram account of him in hospital, propped up in a chair and holding a banana like a gun to the camera. As the post’s caption reveals, Keenan first noticed a pain in his left hip early last month while on a European tour with A Perfect Circle.
While completing his morning hike and a workout ahead of a show in Luxembourg, Keenan says that his hip “just decided to not work”. “[I] had to finish the rest of the tour in pain w[ith] a cane,” he wrote. From there, he made “frantic phone calls and emails” to various medical professionals to figure out the nature of his injury.
“I have shit to do,” Keenan wrote. “Starting in Sep[tember] & all the way to Xmas, I’ll be performing roughly 27 shows in 18 different countries with three different bands. Cancelling isn’t an option. People have purchased tickets and booked travel and lodging, most of which is probably nonrefundable.”

Keenan went in for hip-replacement surgery earlier this week (August 26th), narrowly missing what he says would have been the cutoff date of September 1st to get the surgery and recover in time for the rest of his 2026 touring commitments.
“Hats off to the medical team in LA,” he wrote. “These wizards all aligned their wands… Phew.”
Indeed, the freshly hip-replaced Keenan will be back out on the road next month, performing at Riot Fest and Louder Than Life with Tool before heading to Aftershock Festival in the first week of October. In December, both A Perfect Circle and Puscifer will return to Australia for a conjoined double-duty tour for Keenan; the full details can be found below.
