Dave Grohl Recalls ‘Poaching’ Taylor Hawkins From Alanis Morissette

Share

According to Dave Grohl, Alanis Morissette saw Taylor Hawkins joining Foo Fighters before he’d even been offered the job. Grohl has revisited their early friendship just days before the band’s Australian tour.

Grohl told the story during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, taking things back to KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas in 1995, Foo Fighters had recently released their self-titled debut, while Hawkins was drumming for Morissette as Jagged Little Pill took off.

Backstage, Hawkins came over to introduce himself. Grohl remembered a blond surfer dude who was already a big Foo Fighters fan. They hit it off immediately.

I knew right then I was like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives.’

After that, Grohl would look for Hawkins whenever Morissette was on the same festival bill. He’d grab a few beers and head backstage, and the two became close long before they played in the same band.

Morissette had apparently noticed. According to Grohl, after a festival in France she asked Hawkins on a flight what he’d do if Grohl offered him the Foo Fighters drumming job. Hawkins assured her he wouldn’t leave.

About six months later, Hawkins was in Foo Fighters. Grohl also made a point of crediting Morissette for the opportunity she’d given the drummer.

I thank God for Alanis Morissette because she put that amazing band together and really brought Taylor up in the world.

Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in 1997 and remained with them until his passing in March 2022, aged 50.

Elsewhere in the interview, Grohl discussed the band’s latest album, Your Favorite Toy. Foo Fighters also performed ‘Window’ during their appearance on the show.
