Dark Mofo will return to Hobart from Wednesday, June 9th to Tuesday, June 22nd, 2027, with an expanded art and music program and an early Night Mass ticket release next week.
A strictly limited first release of Night Mass tickets goes on sale at 10am on Tuesday, November 10th, with access available to people who have pre-registered through the Dark Mofo website.
For its 13th edition, the festival is extending its art and music program across two Wednesdays, beginning with The Gathering on June 9th. Palawa hip-hop artist Kieran Lonergan, also known as KIZ, will program the opening celebration for the first time, with a focus on First Nations culture, storytelling and connection to country.
“Today we begin rousing the beast that is Dark Mofo,” artistic director Chris Twite said.
“2027 will be our thirteenth iteration and we are pulling together another ambitious program of art, music, food and ritual for locals and visitors alike to plunge into headfirst.”
Favourites returning
Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh Procession and Burning, and the Nude Solstice Swim will all return. The festival will also feature large-scale public art installations, live performances and music, although the acts and individual events are still to be announced.
“We are excited to extend the festival, bringing forward the opening for a night of performance, celebration and community at The Gathering,” Twite said. “There are many revelations in store.”
Organisers say this years festival brought nearly 50,000 interstate and overseas visitors to Tasmania. Tourism Minister Roger Jaensch put the total number of individual visitors at nearly 116,000, with the event generating $71.8 million (AUD) for the state’s economy.
Dark Mofo remains a project of the Museum of Old and New Art, supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania, with additional support from the City of Hobart.
The full 2027 program will be announced early next year. For now, the Night Mass presale offers the first chance to secure tickets, with mailing list subscriptions open through the festival’s website for further announcements.
