Share

After more than a decade away from cinemas, Scary Movie has returned in a big way, delivering one of the year’s biggest opening weekends and proving there’s still a strong appetite for parody comedy on the big screen.

The latest instalment of the long running franchise debuted with an impressive US$55 (approx $78,233,905.20 AUD) million across North America, comfortably taking the top spot at the weekend box office (per Hollywood Reporter)

International audiences also turned out in force, contributing another US$50.5 (approx $71,859,025.50) million and pushing the film’s worldwide launch to US$105.5 (approx $150,088,203.50) million.

The sixth entry in the series reunites fan favourites Anna Faris and Regina Hall while also marking the return of the Wayans brothers to the franchise they helped create. Directed by Michael Tiddes, the R-rated comedy once again pokes fun at horror films, pop culture and current events, with younger moviegoers driving much of the turnout, interestingly more than 60 per cent of ticket buyers were under 30.
