Melbourne’s band Civic has been announced as the opening act for the Sex Pistols’ upcoming Australian tour in April 2025. The much anticipated tour will see the band perform in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle.
This marks the Pistols’ first return to Australian shores since 1996. This time though, instead of bringing Johnny Rotten, Frank Carter will be handling vocal duties. Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Paul Cook will be returning though.
Civic, known for their raw energy and authentic punk sound, have been making waves in the local music scene. Their debut album, Future Forecast, released in 2021 showcased their commitment to the punk ethos. The album was released under King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s label. They followed up with Taken By Force in 2023, further solidifying their reputation as the Australian punk act to watch.
In a recent interview with Blunt Magazine, Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones reflected on the band’s enduring influence. He acknowledged the band’s unexpected rise to fame, stating, “I guess there are millions of bands, and only a few get that shot. We got that shot.” Jones also expressed enthusiasm about sharing the stage with Civic. He later noted that their vibrant performances resonate with the original spirit of punk that once defined the Sex Pistols.
The tour will see the Sex Pistols performing their seminal album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, in its entirety. Though, Frank Carter will certainly infuse a fresh energy into the tracks. Many speculate that the performances will almost be like a bridge between punks past and present.
Tickets are expected to sell out quickly, given the historic nature of this tour and the combined fan bases of both bands. Fans are encouraged to secure their spots promptly to witness this unique collaboration. Tickets for all Australian shows can be purchased here.
