We’ve had quite a few conversations about crossovers between our so-called alternative scene and other genres this year. We spoke to blackbear about his penchant for emo, JJ Peters of Deez Nuts about his new side project and even All Time Low. The latest act to join the team of creatives unafraid to think outside the box is Detroit five piece I Prevail, who unveiled their new track ‘DOA’ today featuring Joyner Lucas. The song is originally taken from their studio album Trauma, re-worked for Lucas to hop on the tune.
‘DOA’ is accompanied by a trigger warning for its subject matter. It focuses on violence, especially due to the issue of gun regulation over in the United States. Viewer discretion is advised on the video, that “may be distressing to some people and may induce trauma.” According to the BBC, almost half of Americans say they own a gun or live in a household with a gun.
For those of you at the back, Joyner Lucas is an American singer/songwriter/rapper who released his first studio album ADHD this year to great acclaim from a ready community of fans that have supported his journey, with the record debuting at number ten on the US Billboard 200. The LP incorporated features from Logic, Young Thug, Timbaland and more. It’s also very much worth your time to hear his ode to Will Smith, and Will Smith’s response.
This isn’t the first dalliance by I Prevail into this neck of the woods. They recently collaborated with Illenium and Excision on ‘Feel Something’. In their own lane, the band have been on a winning streak, with their 2019 sophomore record Trauma earning them two Grammy nominations. The album saw them locally get added to triple j’s rotation and even won them a #6 ARIA spot.
I Prevail were planning a trip down under which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic to 2021 with Aussie squad Windwaker and revered colleagues Motionless In White. In the meantime, they’ve been spending their time playing Movements at Rocket League and working on new songs, which we’ll hopefully get to hear more of over the rest of 2020.
