Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale has been tapped to perform at Black Sabbath’s final-ever show. And, in case that sentence alone didn’t hit hard enough, she’s also the only woman to be featured on the bill.
The Halestorm frontwoman opened up in a new interview about what it means to be included in the July 5 send-off at Birmingham’s Villa Park, dubbed Back To The Beginning. Speaking with Audacy Music, Hale sounded rather stunned about the whole thing.
“Dude, so we got this e-mail from Sharon Osbourne. And I didn’t answer it for two days,” she said of the festival. “I’m, like, ‘Is this real?’”
It certainly was. And now Hale too is featured on the stacked bill which includes the likes of Tool, Metallica, Slayer, KoRn, Pantera, Anthrax, Alice In Chains, Gojira, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, and Guns N’ Roses. Amongst it all though, Hale is the only woman—and she’s handling it with total grace.
“To be the only woman asked to be there is an honour as well,” she said. “I was talking to my friends, Taylor Momsen and Amy Lee and Maria Brink, and they’re all so proud of me. I said, ‘Hey, girls, I’m carrying you with me.’”
Hale’s set will include a Sabbath cover and a slot in the all-star supergroup being assembled by Tom Morello, who’s serving as musical director for the event. Morello has also floated the idea of Hale and Disturbed’s David Draiman performing ‘Close My Eyes Forever’, originally recorded by Ozzy and Lita Ford.
But with Ozzy’s health still uncertain much of the show is still being planned around the Prince of Darkness’ limitations. Maynard James Keenan recently said it may take “modern miracles” to get him onstage.
Either way, Hale is fully locked in. “It’s this beautiful event everyone gets to look forward to,” she said. “I’m so glad they’re doing it.”
