Are we just doing things for shock value now? After Biffy Clyro covered ‘WAP’ last week, turning it into a “Wet As Biffy” shenanigan that was hilarious but certainly not necessary, heavy staples Motionless In White have ventured into the land of The Killers. Covering iconic classic ‘Somebody Told Me’, the Scranton group have certainly committed to their surprising choice of rendition.
The band have been active throughout the dumpster fire that is 2020, taking the opportunity last month to offer up the Motion Picture Collection. In the vein of experimentation – and covering The Killers when you’re Motionless In White has to be considered that – they transformed versions of their tracks ‘Eternally Yours’ and ‘Another Life’ to make what they described as “something truly special.” They added: “With all of the down time of not touring, we wanted to take the opportunity to try something we’ve never done before.”
Speaking of things they haven’t done before, it would appear that this cover and their re-imagined tunes haven’t gotten in the way of working on a new album for the Motionless gang. Frontman Chris ‘Motionless’ Cerulli teased in a livestream interview with Detroit’s WRIF radio station that the band have been working on their next record.
The new material that he’s been penning is turning out to be a little darker than even he expected. “I realised how internally angry I am at missing the shows and the tours that we’re missing,” he commented. “I know I’m a quietly, or somewhat quietly, angry person, but it’s really coming out in the stuff I’ve been working on. So we’ll see what happens.”
Given the current situation and its consequential impact on studio time, it’s more likely that the next studio album from Motionless In White will drop next year and not this one. Having said that, go ahead and enjoy whatever this is.
