EA and Battlefield Studios have revealed Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer game modes, including a possible battle royale, and Portal updates ahead of its October launch.
During a global reveal event today (31 July), EA and Battlefield Studios officially lifted the lid on Battlefield 6, set to release October 10 on console and PC.
The next title in the franchise marks a return to large-scale all out warfare and introduces a range of new features across multiplayer, campaign, and the expanded Portal mode.
Set in 2027, Battlefield 6 imagines a world in crisis following a high-profile assassination that fractures NATO. As global powers retreat, a private military company known as PAX ARMATA rises to fill the void. Players will fight on behalf of what remains of NATO in a conflict that spans continents and alliances.
The game’s new Kinesthetic Combat System overhauls movement and gunplay, adding tactical tools like Drag and Revive and wall-mounting weapons to reduce recoil. The returning class system includes Assault, Recon, Support and Engineer, with class-specific gadgets and loadouts designed to encourage team-based play.
Destruction makes a comeback too, with the ability to transform combat zones in real time. Maps are tailored to different multiplayer modes, with global locations like Egypt, Gibraltar, and New York. During the event, fans got a sneak peek at the return of the iconic Operation Firestorm map that first appeared in Battlefield 3, too.
At launch, Battlefield 6 will feature fan favourite multiplayer game modes like Conquest, Rush and Breakthrough, alongside Team Deathmatch, Domination and a new mode called Escalation, which centres around capturing control points.
Portal, the franchise’s custom sandbox mode, returns in an updated form, giving players even more tools to create and share new multiplayer experiences. According to EA, the system has been streamlined and expanded to support the creation of “Community Experiences” across various modes and maps.

Just as the presentation wrapped up, fans were given two more sneak peeks – a teaser for the single-player campaign, and a final bow in the form of what appears to be a Battle Royale mode (set in what looks like Los Angeles, no less).
An open beta will run across two weekends in August (9-10th, 14-17th), with early access beginning August 7 via partnered streamers.
“We knew when we set out to create the future of Battlefield, we had to nail the fundamentals of what players have loved about the series for more than 20 years,” says Byron Beede, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Battlefield. “We’re back in our all-out warfare playground, with four world-class teams developing the game as a single squad known as Battlefield Studios.”
“Criterion, DICE, Motive, and Ripple Effect have put their heart and soul into this next Battlefield and we’re thrilled to have shared our first look with you today,” Beede says.
Battlefield 6 launches October 10 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Stay tuned for our first impressions on-ground and news from the event throughout the day.
