Kid Rock is pushing back against claims that he lip synced his recent ‘All American Halftime Show’ performance, but in doing so, he’s confirmed the set wasn’t live.
Following Turning Point USA’s alternative Super Bowl halftime broadcast, social media quickly lit up with accusations that Rock’s performance of ‘Bawitdaba’ appeared out of sync, speaking on Fox News with Laura Ingraham, Rock said he noticed the issue himself after seeing early footage of the show (per Detroit News).
“I even told them when I saw the rough cut, I was like, ‘You guys gotta work on that sync. It’s off,’” Rock said, confirming the performance had been pre-recorded.
“So it was just a syncing issue that they had, and I know they tried to get it right. It was very difficult.”
Rock attributed the problem to his movement on stage rather than any attempt to mime vocals.
“It would have been super easy to sync it up if (the vocals were) pre-recorded,” he said.
“It was very difficult for the Turning Point production crew — who, by the way, I can’t say enough good things about — but this was very difficult for them.”
He later compared his performance style to “jumping around stage like a rabid monkey,” adding that the challenges came from trying to align vocals with footage captured during an energetic set.
The show also included a cover of Cody Johnson’s 2021 track ‘Til You Can’t’, alongside appearances from Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett, according to reports, the livestream drew around six million viewers, with archived footage surpassing 20 million views on YouTube.
In response to the backlash, Rock said he planned to release a new video showing how he and his DJ split vocal duties on ‘Bawitdaba’.
“I’ll answer all the haters tomorrow,” he said.
Rock took aim at Bad Bunny
Rock also took aim at Bad Bunny’s official Super Bowl halftime performance, which marked the first time the show was delivered entirely in Spanish.
“Like most people, I didn’t understand any of it,” Rock said, later adding, “It’s not my cup of tea.”
While stopping short of blaming Bad Bunny directly, Rock criticised the NFL and Turning Point USA for creating what he framed as a cultural divide around the halftime spectacle. Whether the explanation quiets critics remains to be seen, but the episode has once again placed Kid Rock at the centre of a familiar storm.
