Spotify has finally added lossless streaming to the platform for Premium users after teasing the feature for years.
Spotify has finally caught up to its competition and has just announced it will be adding lossless streaming to the platform. Subscribers will be able to enjoy 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC as part of their Premium plan.
The service has already begun rolling out in select markets and will be available to premium listeners soon.
In a statement, Spotify would call lossless streaming “one of the most anticipated features” requested by users for years. The statement would go on to say that lossless streaming, alongside new features like AI DJ, Jams, AI Playlists, brand-new Mixes and daylists, will take users’ “premium experience to the next level”.
Recently, the platform also announced that users will be able to direct message one another on the platform, hoping for users to share and spread their appreciation for music on the app rather than across other social media apps. The new feature was met with some reluctance, as users across social media wondered if it was truly needed.
It didn’t help that Spotify would then, a few days later, announce it would be raising its prices yet again.
It’s becoming a more challenging market for the once beloved streaming app, with several now announcing that they are moving to different platforms.
Earlier this month, Apple even released a new tool making it easier to do so. After an extensive trial period, users across the globe can now import their playlists from other apps to Apple Music.
Apple Music has also supported lossless streaming since 2021 at no extra cost to subscribers.
Several bands have also announced they were leaving Spotify in protest of CEO Daniel Ek’s venture capital fund, Prima Materia’s investments. In June, Ek invested €600 million ($1.07 billion AUD) in the defense company Helsin, which specialises in AI military technology.
Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Hotline TNT, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and more have all departed Spotify since July.
