Spotify users can now use ChatGPT to find songs and more through AI-powered recommendations because why let a human expert do it?
Spotify has announced a new partnership with ChatGPT to help users discover music and podcasts through conversational prompts. Starting today, both Free and Premium users can connect their Spotify accounts to the OpenAI chatbot and ask it to recommend songs, artists, playlists, and podcast episodes.
The feature is opt-in, meaning users can choose whether or not to link their accounts, and the integration can be disconnected at any time, apparently. Spotify emphasised that the collaboration does not involve sharing its music, lyrics, or podcast content with OpenAI for model training.
In its announcement, Spotify shared sample prompts to show how the new feature works. Users can ask ChatGPT to “make a playlist with some Latin artists that are on my heavy rotation,” “recommend podcasts if I want to go deeper into science and innovation,” or “pull up a Focus Mix to keep me in the zone.” All things you’d previously either have to go searching for through one of the many Spotify playlists available, or crazily enough talk to a human to find recommendations for. No longer necessary! Wow!
The integration is part of Spotify’s ongoing effort to expand how users interact with its platform, following earlier collaborations with Alexa, Google Home, Samsung, Volvo, and Sonos. The ChatGPT feature is now available in English across 145 countries on desktop and mobile (iOS and Android).
This launch follows Spotify’s recent updates to its AI policies, which were introduced to combat spam and impersonation while supporting responsible use of AI in music creation. “We’re not here to punish artists for using AI authentically and responsibly,” said Spotify’s head of music, Charlie Hellman. “But we are here to stop the bad actors who are gaming the system.”
Sten Garmark, Spotify’s senior Vice President and global head of consumer experience, said the move fits with the company’s broader goal of accessibility. “Spotify’s vision has always been to be everywhere you are,” Garmark said. “By bringing Spotify into ChatGPT, we’re creating a powerful new way for fans to connect with the artists and creators they love conversationally, whenever inspiration strikes.”
Alongside this update, Spotify has been rolling out other new features, including lossless streaming for Premium subscribers, the “Mix With Spotify” function, and the return of direct messaging. It’s all systems go as founder Daniel Ek steps down as CEO, clearly.
