Oz Comic-Con is set to take place this June in Melbourne, with more and more guests being announced as the date edges nearer. On the tails of the announcement that Batwoman villainess Rachel Skarsten will be heading out for the event, it has now been confirmed that Doug Jones, oh he of Hocus Pocus fame, will be featuring on the line-up.
Jones is well-known for lending his likeness to the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water, a genre-bending film that earned itself an Academy Award. You may also recognise him from Guillermo del Toro’s previous output with legend status, including in Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Mimic (1997), Hellboy (2004), and many more fan favourite and critically acclaimed titles.
The Guillermo del Toro cinematic universe isn’t all he’s familiar with, though. He’s also portrayed the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Within the last few years, he has become the embodiment of both Commander Saru in CBS’ critically acclaimed series Star Trek Discovery and Baron Afanas in FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. Appearing throughout the whole weekend, Doug Jones will be participating in a range of Q&A panels, as well as photo and autograph opportunities with fans.
Set to take place in June, Comic-Con Melbourne is just one of three events staggered over the course of 2020, with dates slated for Brisbane and Sydney in September. Ensuring there’s something for everybody, Comic-Con is partnering with Animaga to bring only the best in anime and manga content. Upholding their reputation in expertise across comics, gaming, anime, cosplay and mainstream pop culture, there’s plenty on offer. You can head to Artist Alley to chat to the creators of some of the world’s most iconic content; from Star Wars to Marvel to DC titles, compete in the Gaming Zone or pick up a nerdy collectible that fits right in with the hundreds of pop vinyls you still collect for some reason.
