The skateboarding world is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures.

Legendary street skater Marc Johnson has died at the age of 49, with tributes flooding in from across skateboarding following confirmation of his passing this week (per The Guardian).

News of Johnson’s death was shared through a statement attributed to longtime friend and fellow professional skater Louie Barletta and published by Thrasher Magazine, a cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Barletta wrote: “He was one of the most talented and creative people to ever step on or off a skateboard.”

One of the defining names of modern street skating

Born in North Carolina before eventually relocating to California, Johnson became one of the defining names of modern street skating through the late ’90s and early 2000s, closely tied to San Jose’s influential Tilt Mode scene, his skating blended technical precision with creativity in a way that reshaped what street skating could look like.

At a time when skateboarding was becoming increasingly polished and competitive, Johnson’s style still felt loose, unpredictable and deeply personal, his trick selection, video parts and overall approach carried a level of individuality that made him stand out even among the biggest names in the sport.

Johnson first broke through nationally skating for Maple before later helping launch Enjoi, one of skateboarding’s most recognisable brands.

His influence reached another level in 2007 when Thrasher Magazine named him Skater of the Year, one of the highest honours in skateboarding culture, that same year his part in Fully Flared became widely regarded as one of the greatest skate video sections ever released.

Outside of skating, Johnson had also been open in recent years about his struggles with addiction and recovery, speaking candidly about the pressures that often come with life inside professional skateboarding.

Barletta revealed the pair had recently spent time together in San Jose, saying Johnson appeared “sober, healthy, and full of life”.

He added: “Without a shadow of a doubt, Marc Johnson was the single most influential person in my life. Everything he did was art.”

For an entire generation of skateboarders, that statement probably won’t feel exaggerated at all.
