Brent Hinds has broken his silence and fired back at Mastodon after his exit, calling them “a sh*t band with horrible humans.”
Three months after guitarist Brent Hinds abruptly exited Mastodon, the silence has finally been broken – albeit in a less-than-formal way.
In a recent Instagram post from Mastodon commemorating the 11th anniversary of their album Once More ‘Round The Sun, a fan commented that they’d “definitely gonna miss B. Hinds” on future releases.
The comment wasn’t directed at Hinds himself, but that didn’t stop him from chiming in with a scathing reply: “I want [sic] miss being in a sh*t band with horrible humans.”
Despite the typo, the meaning was unmistakable – Hinds won’t miss his time in Mastodon, and he clearly doesn’t have much affection for his former bandmates. It’s the first time he’s publicly addressed the split, and the tone is a far cry from the amicable statement the band issued in March.

At the time, Mastodon shared: “Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways. We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors.”
Hinds’ comment adds a different shade to the situation, hinting at deeper fractures behind the scenes. His words remain visible on the post hours later, a surprising move in an era where public image management often means quick comment deletions.
Mastodon, meanwhile, has forged on without Hinds. YouTuber Ben Eller filled in during their first post-Hinds show at Tool’s Live In The Sand event, and guitarist Nick Johnston has since stepped in. There’s been no announcement on a permanent replacement just yet.
While the band pushes forward into its next chapter, Hinds’ blunt comment is a reminder that not every lineup change ends on good terms, and fans may be left wondering what really went down behind closed doors.
