There are gigs, and then there are moments that feel bigger than music. AC/DC’s return to the MCG tonight sat firmly in the second category. Under a clear Melbourne sky, more than 80,000 people packed the stadium to see one of the greatest rock bands of all time prove they still hit harder than anyone else.
From the opening chords of ‘If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)’ to the closing fireworks, it was a night that reminded everyone why AC/DC’s legacy still carries so much weight. Every riff, every bell toll and every flash of Angus Young’s guitar felt like a direct line back to the roots of Australian rock.
The production was massive. Rows of cannons, the unmistakable Hells Bell, a wall of amps stretching across the stage and a light show built to be seen from the furthest seat in the stands. Brian Johnson’s voice sounded strong, the rhythm section locked in tight, and the energy never dipped once.
The crowd sang every line, from ‘Back in Black’ to ‘Highway to Hell’, before losing it completely when the band dusted off a song no one expected to hear again. For the full story on that surprise moment, including the return of a song not played since 1991, head to AC/DC play ‘Jailbreak’ live for the first time since 1991.
These shots capture what words can’t: a band still commanding stadiums half a century into their career, and a crowd that never stopped moving. Scroll through and relive the night AC/DC reminded Melbourne what rock and roll is supposed to feel like.
Between that history-making moment and the sheer power of the performance, there was a sense that Melbourne had just witnessed a band completely in command of its legacy, no reinvention, no nostalgia act, just AC/DC doing what they do better than anyone.
