Girlfight and The Invitation director Karyn Kusama will direct the first two episodes of Amazon’s video game adaptation.
Amazon (or Prime Video, as they prefer to be called) are moving ahead with their adaptation of the 2015 PlayStation game, Life Is Strange. No sooner did we hear that Tatum Grace Hopkins and Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) were cast as the central duo of Max and Chloe, now comes the news via Variety that Karyn Kusama, director of Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body, and Destroyer, will be directing the first two episodes, as well as executive producing through her Familystyle production shingle.
According to the official synopsis, Life Is Strange follows Max, “a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe (Stella). As she struggles to understand this new skill, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering a dark side to their town that will ultimately force them to make an impossible life or death choice that will impact them forever.”
That maps pretty closely onto the general plot of the game (well, series of games – Life is Strange was released episodically), but how tightly the upcoming series cleaves to the established canon is anyone’s guess at this stage. With time travel and the butterfly effect in play, there are infinite possibilities. Of course, the fan base will have their own ideas, as fanbases are wont to do.
Kusama is no stranger to directing for the small screen, having copped an Emmy nomination for her work on the Paramount+ series, Yellowjackets. She’s also helmed episodes of The Man In The High Castle, Masters Of Sex, Billions, The Outsider, and Dead Ringers.
Life Is Strange: Reunion, the next game in the series, will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on March 26, 2026.
