Green Day fans have finally received a proper look at the band’s upcoming comedy film, with the first trailer for Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy now officially released.
Originally premiering under the title New Years Rev at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025, the film has since undergone a name change and is now set to hit US cinemas on August 14th (per Tone Deaf).
Written and directed by Lee Kirk, Nimrods draws inspiration from Green Day’s early years touring across America long before Dookie transformed the trio into one of the biggest punk bands on the planet.

What it’s about
Rather than serving as a traditional biopic, the film follows a fictional young band called the Analog Dogs. After mistakenly believing they’ve landed a support slot for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show, the aspiring musicians set off on a chaotic road trip from Kansas to California in hopes of meeting their heroes.
As expected, things don’t exactly go according to plan.
The newly released trailer leans heavily into the film’s comedy elements, combining road trip misadventures, youthful optimism and the kind of Do It Yourself punk spirit that helped define Green Day‘s formative years.
Speaking about the project last year, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained that the film captures many of the experiences Green Day encountered while building their career.
“It’s about the experience that Green Day had on the road in the early days of more of a DIY spirit,” Armstrong told The Hollywood Reporter.
“We played anywhere and everywhere, and a lot of shows would get shut down because the cops would come. But there’s also the mud fight that happened at Woodstock. Lee did a great job of incorporating all of those elements that we’ve had in the past.”
Alongside appearances from Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool, the film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust and Mckenna Grace. Comedy fans will also recognise Fred Armisen, while The Office stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey are among the supporting cast.
Armstrong has previously spoken about wanting to create a Green Day movie for years, citing projects from the Ramones, The Beatles and The Who as major inspirations.
With its mix of comedy, nostalgia and punk-rock fun, Nimrods looks set to offer fans a wildly different take on Green Day’s story when it arrives later this year.
