Faith No More may finally be gearing up for a return to the stage, and fans are already reading between the lines.
The influential alt-metal outfit sparked speculation overnight after posting a photo of a live crowd to social media with nothing more than the text: “2027.” No explanation or caption, just enough to send longtime followers into full detective mode.
If the tease amounts to an official comeback, it would mark the band’s first live performance since wrapping up touring duties behind Sol Invictus, their acclaimed 2015 record and, to date, their most recent studio release.
The timing has caught attention given how uncertain the band’s future has appeared in recent years, Faith No More appeared set for a long awaited return in 2020, after dropping hints online and announcing live dates, those plans never materialised (per Alternative Press) .
First came pandemic delays, and then the tour was shelved indefinitely after frontman Mike Patton publicly discussed the impact lockdown had on his mental health and his decision to step away from performing at the time.
A sense of closure
Expectations of a reunion were cooled even further earlier this year, Patton reflected on the band’s status and said there was a “sense of closure” following their final run of shows in 2016, comments many interpreted as signalling the end of the road.
That’s why this latest post has landed differently, there’s still no official announcement attached to the teaser and no indication of whether the number points to a tour, festival appearances, new music, or something else entirely.
For a band that has rarely done things the conventional way, a cryptic message may be exactly how they’d choose to restart the conversation.
For now, Faith No More fans have one thing circled in their minds: 2027.
