Nine Inch Nails Is Back in the Driver’s Seat with New Material on the Way

Share

It’s official: Nine Inch Nails is gearing up for a full-blown return. After years of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross focusing on film soundtracks—most recently for Tron: Ares—it seems the industrial icons are turning their creative energy back to their roots.

And if the whispers are true, the new material could be just as gritty and abrasive as their Downward Spiral heyday.

Reznor himself dropped the news in a fresh interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing: “We’re taking the inspiration we’ve garnered and funnelling it into a Nine Inch Nails project, which we’re working on now. We’re ready to be back in the driver’s seat.”

This revelation isn’t entirely out of the blue. In an April 2024 interview with GQ, Reznor hinted at their restless creative energy, saying: “We’re bored… We enjoy doing films. But man, what if we try to do that [make a new record]? What if we could take what we’re good at… and apply it to something else?”

A Long-Awaited Comeback

For Nine Inch Nails fans, this marks their first album cycle since 2018’s Bad Witch, or 2020’s instrumental Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts. Either way, it’s been too long. Reznor’s mention of being “excited” signals a return not just to the studio but to the experimental edge that made Nine Inch Nails legendary in the first place.

And if their upcoming Tron: Ares soundtrack is any indication—described as “industrial and gritty”—this might be the heaviest Reznor and Ross have sounded in years.

What’s Next?

While specifics on the new album remain under wraps, Reznor’s comments suggest that Nine Inch Nails is embracing a revitalised creative approach. Whether this means another brooding industrial masterpiece or something entirely unexpected, one thing is clear: Nine Inch Nails is back, and they’re ready to make noise.
