Ghanaian-Australian artist Genesis Owusu is already playing in a league of his own, but has gone another step further in achieving a new milestone for the Aussie music scene today. The first Australian artist to host the Radio Hour on Sonos Radio, the musician follows in the footsteps of Phoebe Bridgers, David Byrne, Khruangbin, Brian Eno and more in curating a line-up of artists for the renowned program.
“I curated an hour of Afrofuturism, selecting black artists or groups from any era, any continent and any genre, that pushed sound forward into a new realm, or are currently doing so,” he commented. “Boundary breakers and sonic rebels whose sounds either ended up inspiring a lot of what we love today, or are on the forefront of bringing the music world into a future space. All unapologetically black.”
The industry-leading musician released his critically acclaimed debut album Smiling With No Teeth earlier in the year, which ascended him to legend status almost immediately upon its drop. “When the band and I were creating Smiling With No Teeth,” he noted on the record, “we essentially made 60 hours of music for the album in 6 days.” He continues to reference recent single ‘Same Thing’, specifying it as “one of the tracks born from the seemingly limitless SWNT sessions. The track is still in the realm of the album’s themes of mental health (more specifically, the crazy shit the mind makes up), so the video follows suit with a psychedelic barrage of both colourful and claustrophobic imagery.”
Having just sold out almost all of his dates here in the land down under, Genesis Owusu will kick off his 2022 with a run of shows in North America as he continues on a victory lap in support of the high-impact debut.
