In this week’s shiny new edition, we get the juice on Brisbane indie-popster Lemonade Baby, whose latest sliver groovy, neon-tinted buoyancy is sure to get your shoulders shimmying. ‘Is It Too Late’ is the fourth single to come from the soon-to-be festival mainstay, and according to Lemonade Baby (or to close mates and his mum, Brannon Hughes), the track had a pretty lowkey origin story: “This song started with a sample I was playing around with, which I thought was pretty cool. I then added the drums and the [bassline], and when I woke up four hours later, I gave it a beat and a loose melody… But then life got in the way.
“I actually lost this song on my hard drive for close to a year and a half, but when I rediscovered it, I changed a few things and then started working on the lyrics, which took a long time for me to settle on. I found it hard to put into words how I was feeling at the time, but I did eventually get there.”
Citing the likes of Cut Copy, Oscar Key Sung and Benee as influences, Hughes is no doubt speeding down the fast lane to the big leagues. Godspeed, we say! Godspeed!
Who’s in your band, what do they play, and what would be your non-musical superpowers?
Brannon Hughes, I write and yell into the microphone! Definitely teleporting.
When you’re not tearing shit up on your instruments, what do you legends like to get up to?
I really like eating, drinking and shit-talking…
What would your hometown’s landmark be?
Brisbane, I’m sure, is known for its Expo 88 special feature, the Southbank pool.
What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
That’s a hard one! it’s either to do with how the performance went or if anyone’s hungry.
What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Shots.
Tell us about your most memorable show, what made it so special?
Funnily enough, I jumped on a song at a friend’s show at Black Bear Lodge in Fortitude Valley and I couldn’t hear anything in my in-ear monitors, so I just T-Pain’d my way through the song. It was surprisingly empowering…
What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Tyler, The Creator would be cool! I feel like his shows have always been wild, so I’d love to feel that energy.
What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
I’m sadly so late to this, but Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. If we’re strictly talking about modern albums, ASTROWORLD by Travis Scott.
If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Sprite, my favorite faux-lemonade.
Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
I’m just trying to write honest music, and if that connects with people, then that’s all I need.
