KennyHoopla has shared the first video for his upcoming EP conditions of an orphan//, which shares production credits with Paramore drummer Zac Farro and 50 Cent collaborator Mike Elizondo.
The singer has shared a video for his latest track ‘orphan//’, which he released last week. The track will be part of a forthcoming EP from the artist and is produced by Paramore drummer Zac Farro.
The video, directed by Jack Cooper, follows Kenny as he takes on the role of a creative director in charge of his image. “I wanted to portray my love of fashion, but at the same time capture what it feels like in this industry to have to wear all the hats and do most things yourself these days,” he says of the video. “Sometimes the coffee gets spilled when you have too many things to do at once, but you just gotta work through it.”
The singer has shared that his new EP is an exploration of the artist embracing the music he grew up with while digging deep into themes of grief, revenge, trauma and love. The EP was also co-produced with Mike Elizondo, a frequent collaborator with 50 Cent, Turnstile and Linkin Park.
‘Orphan//’ is just the first of many tracks diving into the complicated emotional journey Kenny has been on since his 2021 mixtape SURVIVORS GUILT: THE MIXTAPE//. While the ‘estella//’ writer has been busy releasing singles over the years, conditions of an orphan will be their first compilation release in years.
Kenny would share that collaborating with Farro and Elizondo helped to revitalise his creative energy and find the strength to explore such heavy topics. He would also share that the track ‘orphan//’ helped supercharge the entire collaborative process and spark the theme of grief, which permeates throughout the EP.
“I felt the strongest about [orphan//] from the start. It’s about wanting to pick someone up and help them – but there’s no single way to grieve. There’s no exact process for it, and sometimes the puzzle pieces just don’t fit. It has made me feel very depressed, but I have to somehow power through and be ready to fight again, even when your fucking arms are broken.”
However, the singer still struggles with being vulnerable in front of his audience – a vulnerability stemming from feeling out of place in a music industry that’s changing all too fast.
“A lot of the time, I just feel very alone, like an orphan,” he adds. “I’m just trying to find a home, literally and metaphorically – as a person, and as someone in the music industry. I’m trying to see where I fit in, given the circumstances of life that everyone has to go through.”
“I’ve previously restrained myself from talking about deeper issues in my life – trying to compartmentalise my experiences. It’s a constant tug of war between my personal and artistic lives.”
