More than two decades after it first exploded onto speakers around the world, System Of A Down classic “Chop Suey!” has hit another colossal milestone.
The band’s defining 2001 anthem has officially surpassed 2 billion streams on Spotify, cementing its place as one of the most enduring and influential heavy tracks of the digital era (per The PRP).
Originally released in August 2001 as the lead single from the band’s landmark sophomore album Toxicity, “Chop Suey!” quickly became a generational anthem, a track that fused chaos, melody and political unease into one of nu-metal’s most instantly recognisable songs.
The achievement marks yet another chapter in the song’s remarkable lifespan, having first crossed the billion stream barrier back in 2023, for drummer John Dolmayan, the moment is still surreal:
“This never becomes normal to me, I remember the days playing to four people including the bartender.”
That perspective makes the milestone even more staggering, what started as a left field, unconventional metal single with cryptic lyrics and explosive shifts in intensity has gone on to become one of the most streamed heavy songs in history.
Spotify only tells part of the story
The official “Chop Suey!” music video has also amassed more than 1.5 billion YouTube views, while the song continues to dominate playlists, algorithm recommendations and live set wishlists across multiple generations of listeners.
The track remains one of the standout moments from Toxicity, the six times platinum album that helped push System Of A Down from cult favourites into global heavy music icons, more than 20 years on, “Chop Suey!” still feels as urgent, unpredictable and explosive as it did on release.
In an era where many early 2000s hits have faded into nostalgia, System Of A Down’s biggest anthem continues to evolve beyond its time, proving its appeal stretches far beyond the nu-metal boom it helped define.
Two billion streams isn’t just a number, it’s proof that “Chop Suey!” remains one of heavy music’s true modern classics.
