Jim Carrey is keeping fans guessing when it comes to talk of him reprising his iconic role as Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask. Despite hinting at retirement a few years ago, Carrey recently said he’d consider returning to the franchise— only if the right idea came along.
In a new interview with Comicbook.com, Carrey revisited his earlier thoughts about retiring from acting, explaining that he’s now more selective about the projects he takes on. “It has to be the right idea,” he said, adding, “Anything’s possible in this world.” It seems for Carrey, it’s not about the money. It’s actually just about finding something that excites him and feels worth his while. This stance makes perfect sense when you have had a career as broad and vast as Carrey’s.
Carrey starred in the original The Mask in 1994, a role that cemented his reputation as a comedy legend. He later famously turned down a $10 million offer for the 2005 sequel, citing his experience with Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls as a reason to avoid reprising roles. However, he seems to be slightly softening his stance now, leaving the door open for a return only if the timing and concept also feel right.
In the same interview, Carrey also expressed his interest in revisiting another fan-favourite role—The Grinch. The 2000 film’s makeup process was notoriously uncomfortable, but Carrey’s enthusiasm for a potential return is higher now thanks to modern CGI and motion-capture technology.
While Carrey has talked about retiring from acting to focus on other pursuits, his upcoming role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 proves he’s still open to the right projects. Whether that means The Mask 2 is in the cards remains to be seen—but don’t count it out just yet. As Carrey himself said, “Who knows?”
