‘American Idol’ is leaning hard into rock for its 2026 finale, with Mötley Crüe and Shinedown confirmed to perform during the season’s final showdown.
The three hour finale airs Monday, May 11th in the US at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with streaming available the next day via Disney+ (Australia) and Hulu, it’ll see the final three contestants battle it out for the crown, but the real curveball is the injection of legacy rock into a show that rarely lets it off the leash (per Blabbermouth).
Crüe head to prime time
Mötley Crüe stepping onto the ‘Idol’ stage feels like a collision of two completely different worlds, one built on polished vocals and audience votes, the other on excess, grit, and decades of controlled destruction.
Still, the band are in a reflective phase right now, their upcoming ‘The Return Of Carnival Of Sins’ tour celebrates both the 20 year mark of their infamous 2005–2006 run and 45 years of Mötley Crüe as a band, it kicks off July 17th in Pennsylvania, with Extreme and Tesla along for the ride.
There’s also a quieter layer behind the noise, the band have committed $1 from every ticket sold to ASAP! (After School Arts Program), funnelling money into youth arts initiatives through their Giveback Initiative.
Shinedown’s return hits close to home
Shinedown join the bill, bringing a more modern rock edge to the finale, the broader lineup swings wildly across genres, featuring Clay Aiken, Jason Mraz, Nelly, En Vogue, Tori Kelly, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms.
Shinedown’s inclusion on the ‘Idol’ finale isn’t just another TV slot, it lands in the middle of a major return for the band, the Florida outfit are heading back to Australia this September for their first tour here in 15 years, co-headlining with Bush. It’s a long-overdue run that finally brings one of modern rock’s most consistent chart forces back into local venues.
With 24 #1 rock hits and a new album, ‘EI8HT’, due May 29th, they’re not exactly coasting on legacy either.

A band still pushing through
It’s a scattershot mix, but Crüe’s presence is the one that stands out, not just because of their legacy, but because it’s hard to imagine tracks born out of Sunset Strip chaos sitting comfortably in a TV format built on restraint.
The performance also lands after a turbulent stretch for the band, their 2025 Las Vegas residency was delayed following Vince Neil’s health scare, later revealed to involve multiple strokes, including a major episode over Christmas 2024.
Neil has since returned to the stage, and the band are clearly moving forward, even as the past continues to loom large, whether this ‘Idol’ appearance feels like a strange fit or a smart crossover, one thing’s certain, it won’t be subtle.
