Mötley Crüe’s upcoming ‘American Idol’ appearance just got a lot more unexpected, with country-pop superstar Carrie Underwood now confirmed to join the band during the season finale performance on Monday, May 11th.
The three hour finale will air on ABC in the US before streaming via Disney+ (Australia) and Hulu, with the remaining contestants battling for the 2026 title while a surprisingly rock heavy guest lineup takes over the stage.
Alongside Crüe and Underwood, the finale will also feature performances from Shinedown, Jason Mraz, Nelly, En Vogue, Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler, and more.
The crossover itself isn’t completely out of nowhere. Underwood has had a long-running connection to Mötley Crüe stretching back nearly two decades, in 2009, her version of the band’s power ballad ‘Home Sweet Home’ became the official farewell anthem for eliminated ‘American Idol’ contestants during that season of the show (per Blabbermouth).
At the time, Underwood also tied the release to animal rescue charities, donating part of the proceeds to the Humane Society Of The United States.
Long before that, she also joined Vince Neil onstage in Nashville back in 2007 for a live performance of ‘Kickstart My Heart’, proving her appreciation for classic hard rock has never exactly been subtle beneath the polished country image.
For Mötley Crüe, the performance continues a strange but interesting phase for the band, they’re currently celebrating 45 years together ahead of their upcoming ‘The Return Of Carnival Of Sins’ tour, while also continuing to push into spaces that traditionally sit well outside the Sunset Strip chaos they originally came from.
That contrast is part of what makes this booking fascinating, ‘American Idol’ has never really been built for bands like Mötley Crüe, whose entire legacy revolves around excess, unpredictability, and volume, but pairing them with Carrie Underwood, someone who comfortably moves between mainstream country and classic rock influences, might actually bridge that gap better than expected.
The appearance also comes after a difficult period for the band following Vince Neil’s health scare in late 2024, which delayed their planned Las Vegas residency before Neil eventually returned to performing earlier this year.
Whether the collaboration turns chaotic or surprisingly polished, it’s probably going to be one of the more talked about moments of the finale.
