Far Cry Is Getting A TV Show From The Creators of Fargo & It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

The Far Cry video game series is set to receive a TV adaptation spearheaded by Noah Hawley (Fargo) and Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia). The series has been confirmed as an anthology and will feature a new cast and location each season.

A Far Cry TV adaptation is officially in the works from the minds behind hit shows Fargo and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Announced earlier today, the forthcoming live-action adaptation will feature Noah Hawley and Rob “Rob Mac” McElhenney as showrunners. While plot details are still under wraps, it’s been confirmed the show will feature a different cast and setting each season.

Which should excite any Far Cry fan, thanks to the series’ habit of creating charismatic villains.

This won’t be the first time Mac has worked with video game publisher Ubisoft or within the world of video games. Originally, the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star was set to direct a Minecraft adaptation before dropping out of the project in 2018.

Mac would also work with Ubisoft while starring in the Apple+ show Mythic Quest. The company would approach Mac to pitch him the video game comedy show. Throughout the series, all in-game footage shown of the titular game was developed by Ubisoft as well.

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realised,” said Mac. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

Hawley himself would say in the same statement:

“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” said Hawley. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

Far Cry had its first live-action adaptation in 2008, directed by Uwe Boll and starring Til Schweiger. Netflix would also release the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, inspired by Far Cry 3‘s retro-themed expansion Blood Dragon.

Fans have already started to speculate where the first series will take place. Thailand is looking like the frontrunner as Hawley spent some time in the country filming Alien: Earth. However, until producers officially confirm more details, we can only speculate.

Still, as a Far Cry fan, I’m surprisingly optimistic for this project. Here’s hoping the series will be as fun as the classic Far Cry 3 web series that featured Better Call Saul‘s Michael Mando.
