Highlander has begun production under John Wick director Chad Stahelski, with Man Of Steel‘s Henry Cavill in the title role.
I’m pretty pumped for the Highlander remake. The 1986 original is a massive part of my internal pop culture cosmology – those early VHS viewings put a fold in my brain I’ll never iron smooth. And while I side-eye the vast bulk of everything that came after in the franchise (although I’m starting to get the idea I should give the TV series another day in court) I’m okay with the notion of a remake – especially one from long time stuntie and John Wick director Chad Stahelski, a self-confessed Highlander fanatic. We should be in for a good time. Just repeat this mantra: they can’t fuck it up as badly as The Crow.
They won’t, of course – Stahelski knows his way around an action sequence, and the cast is spec-bloody-tacular, with chiseled nerd Henry Cavill as sword-swinging immortal Connor MacLeod, big Dave Bautista as his nemesis, the Kurgan, Russell Crowe as mentor figure Ramirez, plus Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Drew McIntyre, Max Zhang, Jeremy Irons, and Kevin McKidd. We’re in good hands.
But, a couple of publicity photos aside (see the header image, friends), we haven’t had much in the way of concrete promo or behind the scenes material. Well, that all changes now! But only by a couple of degrees. Check it out:
X account UnboxPHD seems to have broken this one. There’s not much to it – Cavill and Bautista are hanging out on set while an action sequence/FX shot gets set up. Bautista is definitely in costume, wearing some kind of priests’ raiment, while Cavill may or may not be – if he is, the hoodie suggests this is a scene set in the modern day. You can glean whatever you can from the set dressing, just for the exercise. Given the new Highlander doesn’t even have a release date yet, we’ll be begging for scraps like this for a while yet.
