Amyl Photo Dispute: Amy Taylor Sought $36,000 In Legal Fees. The Court Awarded $9,145.

For a dispute that has featured claims of images being worth millions of dollars, accusations of intimidation, multiple court hearings, failed mediation and enough public statements to fill a small book, the latest development comes down to a much simpler number.

A California court has awarded Amy Taylor $9,145.08 in legal fees after photographer Jamie Nelson’s unsuccessful civil harassment restraining order application.

That’s well short of the $36,066 Taylor’s legal team had sought.

The legal fight centres on a series of photographs Nelson shot of Taylor in 2025. Nelson later began selling fine art prints from the shoot, while Taylor argued she never authorised the images to be commercially sold. The dispute has since expanded into multiple court proceedings, copyright counterclaims, public statements, failed mediation attempts and months of increasingly heated back-and-forth between both camps.

Importantly, this fee award relates to Nelson’s unsuccessful restraining order application and not the separate federal dispute over the photographs themselves.

Nelson’s camp is naturally calling the result a win.

Taylor’s camp can also point out that the court still awarded fees.

Which pretty much sums up this entire dispute.

Nobody seems to be landing the knockout blow they keep telling everyone they’ve landed.

The fee dispute stems from Nelson’s failed restraining order application against the Amyl and the Sniffers frontwoman. After the application was dismissed, Taylor sought to recover more than $36,000 in legal costs associated with defending the matter.

The court ultimately awarded around a quarter of that amount.

Nelson said she was disappointed any fees were awarded, but noted that the court “declined to award anything close to what was requested.”

Meanwhile, the separate federal dispute over Nelson’s Champagne Problems photo series continues to drag on.

That case has already produced public claims of a “near-complete victory”, arguments about whether photographs can be worth millions of dollars, and repeated attempts by both sides to frame the latest court developments as decisive wins.

The court itself has been considerably less dramatic.

At a March hearing, Judge George Wu repeatedly encouraged the parties to settle, warning that “there’s no telling who is ultimately going to win” and comparing the outcome to “rolling the dice.”

So far, that assessment appears to be holding up remarkably well.

Mediation has already failed.

The federal case remains unresolved.

Nelson’s copyright counterclaims remain active.

Taylor has been given an opportunity to amend part of her complaint.

More hearings are scheduled.

And now the latest scorecard reads:

Requested: $36,066.

Awarded: $9,145.08.

The fight over the photographs continues.
