One of horror’s most influential modern franchises is stepping back into the woods.
Lionsgate has officially locked in a theatrical release date for a brand new Blair Witch film, with the currently untitled reboot set to arrive in cinemas on September 24th, 2027.
Details remain tightly under wraps, with no cast announcements or plot information revealed yet, but the project marks the next evolution of a property that helped reshape horror filmmaking at the turn of the century (per Hollywood Reporter).
This new chapter will be directed by Dylan Clark from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin, with Clark also revising the screenplay, behind the scenes there’s a notable blend of old and new blood attached to the project.
Original The Blair Witch Project stars on board
Original The Blair Witch Project stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams are onboard as executive producers alongside original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale, giving the reboot a direct connection back to the film that started it all.
The project forms part of Lionsgate and Blumhouse’s ongoing partnership to revisit and reimagine some of the studio’s most recognisable horror properties. The plan was first revealed during CinemaCon in 2024, where Lionsgate’s film chair Adam Fogelson promised audiences “a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.”
That’s no small challenge.
When The Blair Witch Project debuted at Sundance in 1999, it became an instant cultural phenomenon. Produced for approximately US$35,000 before marketing costs, the film exploded into one of cinema’s biggest success stories after its theatrical release, eventually earning US$248 million worldwide and helping establish found footage as one of horror’s defining formats.
Now, nearly three decades later, Blair Witch is heading back into the darkness, whether this version leans into mythology, reinvents the format entirely, or returns to stripped back terror remains unknown, but horror fans officially have a date to circle.
